Our restorations are with Toyota standards, we mostly use original parts, and seek that our Land Cruisers are matching numbers. In RESTORING LEGENDS we live passion for Land Cruiser.
OUR DREAM TEAM
We are enriched with incredibly talented and experienced team members, all of them have 10+ years of experience plus quite a few certifications in their respective fields, all have worked for well-known companies before, they are all great connoisseurs of Land Cruisers and some of them have personal records of rebuilt engines and restored cars. Some of their works have been successfully showcased at international events.
Our meticulous process begins by selecting the best kept trucks. We exhaustively search for those with original engines and rust-free bodies, once we have found the truck we want, the process starts.
1. Photo record:
We begin with a complete photo studio of the vehicle in its current state to store it in its file and to compare it at the end of the process. We will also take photos during the process to clearly identify the different stages until completion.
2. Test drive:
When possible, we take the vehicle for a short drive to put all of the mechanical components to test and get a feeling of the engine, brakes, drive train, body adjustment, etc.
Complete vehicle wash before the work begins (exterior, interior, engine and undercarriage).
4. Inspection and initial diagnostic:
Before disassembling it, the vehicle is subject of a thorough inspection of all of its components, aesthetics, structure, body, brakes, transmission, gearbox, engine, interior, etc. During this inspection a first evaluation report is generated with items to fix, replace or correct. To this evaluation report, the vehicle specifications or improvements previously requested by the customer are added.
This process starts with the interior, that is: the removal of the chairs, carpet, door trims, upholstery, roof liner, etc.), all of this is taken to our upholstery specialist for its respective restoration. Subsequently, the process continues with the electrical system, which is removed with all the switches and accessories and taken to our master electrician. In the same way all glasses and rubber seals are disassembled, verifying which ones should be replaced and / or repaired. Afterwards, all the body panels are removed to take them to the body station. Once the body is disassembled and the chassis is taken apart, we proceed to remove the engine, suspension and drivetrain as well as the brake system, steering system and other mechanical components which are taken to the mechanics station.
Beginning with blasting, all body panels and chassis are cleaned (grease, previous coatings, dust or rust is removed) through abrasion. The etching and scratching in the surface prepares the surface so that the paint bonds and sticks with it. After this, the parts are allowed to dry in a safe environment before the next step.
In this stage, we put all the body panels back together by repairing and or replacing as needed. By using the best in welding and hydraulic tools, we ensure keeping the original quality standards and measurements.
8. Powder coating:
During this process by using specialized tools, the powder is placed inside of a paint gun that charges the particles using an electrical source. Next, the part that is being coated is grounded to provide an opposite charge that will attract the particles as they are sprayed, once the part is completely coated it’s placed in an oven which heats the coating to a minimum of 160 degrees Celsius. Once the powder reaches this temperature it melts and flows together, forming long chemical chains which give the coating its rigidity and durability. We powder coat some specific elements needing more protection such as chassis, undercarriage protection, mounts, step bars, and some small engine components exposed to the environment.
Our prep station allows us to clean, buff, sand and perform all the preparatory work in a cleaner environment. Our prep station uses a pressurization fan to bring in fresh air from upper levels into the prep station. The air is filtered through an exhaust plenum located at the back of the workstation and ultimately expelled outside through an exhaust fan. We use top-quality supplies.
Before refinishing the exterior, masking and resealing of the vehicle is done, then in our state-of-the-art paint booth, vehicle is covered with two wet coats of the highest quality polyester primer and 3 clear coats. Our electronically controlled heating system effectively distribute clean, heated airflow throughout the entire booth to achieve a fast and smooth curing.
11. Mechanical components
All mechanical components are fully disassembled (engine, gearbox, transmission, brakes, clutch, brakes, steering, suspension, etc.). Drivetrain is disassembled, cleaned, inspected, repaired as necessary and tested using factory service manual approved procedures. For the engine, the procedure generally involves honing, new piston rings, bearings, gaskets, oil seals. The rest of the components are cleaned and painted in original colors, replacing all worn-out and/or broken parts.
Vehicle interior is put back to factory color, a complete carpet kit is installed and all door panels are replaced. With the seats, we remove current upholstery, add new foam and batting to damaged areas, and spring repair when needed, once that’s all taken care of, reupholstering the seats takes place. With hard-top versions, roof liner is replaced, soft tops are restored to mint condition or completely replaced when necessary. All gauges are given a complete makeover.
13. Electrical system:
By having the complete electrical system removed, we verify wire by wire, component by component, including the starter, alternator, distributor, coil and all internal components, diagnose, and restore / replace as needed, all lights/signals are restored / replaced as well as all gauges.
14. Wheels & Tires:
OEM wheels are restored and painted and/or replaced according to each customer preference, new tires are fitted as requested by customer.
Here the fruits of our team’s efforts begin to show up, in this stage all the existing, repaired and new parts of the vehicle are put back together. Starts with installing the drivetrain, suspension, wheels and tires, brake & fuel lines, then the body, the interior and the electrical system.
16. Test drive:
The time to test all the work done has come, we schedule 2 test drives, the first one, mostly highway driving without big elevation changes, which does not put the engine to high revs, for approximately 300kms. The second one, includes some elevation changes and twisty roads which put the engine, suspension and brakes to test, that’s another 200kms. After both tests, we take the vehicle to our shop to check / correct any issues detected.
17. Quality check:
A complete check list is performed where nearly 400 points are inspected throughout the vehicle, guaranteeing the perfect operation and correction of faults.
18. Preparation and final photo studio:
Our final stage, thorough cleaning and polishing before taking it to our photo booth, to capture the result of countless hours of work and dedication before giving the keys to a happy customer.
